| Using Microsoft Photo Editor and Barrowvale Easy Sites |
| Using Microsoft Photo Editor and Barrowvale Easy Sites |
This article describes how to prepare your images using MS Photo Editor and Barrowvale Easy Sites Scanning Source the first thing to check is that you have the correct source i.e. scanner or camera and that it the correct make and model. To do this we go to FILE/SELECT SCANNER SOURCE… Say for example if our scanner is a 1236USB Ultima 2000, then we make sure that this is selected and we click OK. Scanning To scan, click the scanner icon on the toolbar or else go to FILE/SCAN IMAGE… Wait for the scanner window to come up, make sure that you have the resolution and scaling set correctly and then click on PREVIEW. When the scanner has previewed the image, use your mouse to select the area of the image that you wish to scan and then click SCAN. If you scan in an image which is a copy of an original photo, it will never look as good as a scan of the original. Resizing The image will now be displayed in MS Photo Editor. You can save the original image if you like by going to FILE/SAVE AS. For the web we will need to resize the image first to 360 pixels wide and then to 120. Each time you save them, make sure that you put the number of pixels after the name so that you will be able to quickly identify it later. Printing Images In Photo editor it is convenient when you are resizing the pixels to have the measurement units set as pixels. You do this by going to VIEW/MEASUREMENT UNITS/PIXELS. However, on some PCs we have noticed that you will not be able to print images unless you set measurement units as inches or centimeters.
Importing and resizing images from digital Camera Some digital camera software packages can be quite limited in what they can achieve in relation to resizing images or compressing images to optimize them for the Internet. One such package is Ulead Photo Plus. If you are using this package, we recommend that you take in your images from the camera in the normal way and save them on your PC. Then close Ulead Photo Plus and us a package such as MS Photo Editor. Open up the images in MS Photo Editor, resize them first to 360 and then to 120 as described above under Resizing The End

| Why has the Internet been so successful? |
|
The whole secret to the success of the internet has been the ability to share large amounts of information across our telephone lines at amazingly low cost and at incredible speed. Large Companies like Amazon.com were very quick to see the potential of the Internet early on and have established the biggest online book store in the World. Other companies followed suit and now there is quite a sizeable amount of business being carried out on the net. Large businesses in Ireland have already established an internet presence and are developing a strategy. However, small and medium business are slower to get moving. |
| Is it worth listening to all this excitement or will I just ignore it? |
|
During the seventies and eighties there was a switch from small retail to supermarket outlets. That was a time of huge change for many business people who made the courageous decision to go down that route. It was a risk but it paid off for those who took that risk. Many of the smaller retailers and some of the wholesalers who didn't keep up with the times had to close down. Business has to be careful not to be left behind in this new era and must have an open mind on new techniques. |
| Will consumers use this new technology? |
|
Do you think that consumers will resist the change to electronic commerce? Maybe they will initially, but look what the banks achieved with cash dispensing machines in the eighties and nineties. Whenever a customer came in to make a withdrawal, they were shown how to do it with the cash dispenser until eventually they could do it on their own without the need for staff. This will happen again and the banks will probably be at the forefront of training consumers how to make cash transfers over the internet. Once consumers gain confidence with moving money over the internet, they will then be in a position to buy online. Consumers will expect goods and services to be available on the net and will demand that traditional companies change. |
| What are the Strengths of my Business on the Web? |
|
According to a new study from Datamonitor and Microsoft, Jun 20 2000, e-commerce revenues for European SMEs will soar by 800 percent from EUR409 million in 1999 to EUR3.2 billion by 2003. Local businesses should appreciate that they have the huge advantage of a presence on the ground already, the relationship, the thrust and the loyalty that they have built up with their customers down through the years is so important. That relationship that now exists will give SMEs a huge advantage now when they go online. A recent survey by Greenfield online found that clicks and mortar retailers (Retailers with both an Internet and physical presence on the ground) continue to prove most popular with consumers as 43 percent say they are most comfortable shopping at these retailers' sites (compared with purely online retailers) However, it is important not to be complacent about your customers. |
| What are the Benefits of a Web presence to me? |
|
There are some important considerations that a business should have when deciding whether to go online. It will undoubtedly enhance the perception and the image of the business, but will this lead to increased profits? This is the most important question facing any business. Will it lead to greater market penetration and growth over a wider geographical area or perhaps stabilise a current falling market position. Will it lead to lower staffing and administration costs. Will it lead to lower costs involved in rent, heat and light for the retail display area. It must do some of these things because at the end of the day an internet presence must make more profit for the business. |
| Does an Internet Strategy suit your company? |
|
The first thing that a company needs, is to identify if the products they are selling can be sold over the internet. One way to work this out is to ask yourself, could a customer ring you over the phone, order the item and ask for it to be delivered or packed for collection. Another question is, if a customer could see a picture or a description of the product or service could they make a decision to buy it there and then. If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then this business has the potential to go online. |
| What is a Domain Name? |
|
A domain name is a unique name that identifies a company on the Internet. If the company's name was Acme, then they might register their name on the Internet as www.acme.ie. A .ie domain means that the company is registered in Ireland. Only Irish legal entities can register as .ie. The .com domain is an American domain and they are granted purely on a first come first serve basis. If a person was doing business in a specific market they may wish to register a domain in that country e.g. '.co.uk' for United Kingdom or .fr for France. |
| Do I need to register a Domain Name? |
|
When a company registers their domain name they can then request that their ISP personalise their email address. Their email changes from theirname@theirISP.ie to anything@theirdomain.ie. Registering a domain name on the Internet is the equivalent of registering a business, company or trademark. Similar to registering a company or trademark a domain name is issued on a first come first serve basis. Once registered no one else can use that domain name. If a company or business wants to protect their name, they will register it on the internet. If you consider your name to be valuable and would not like to see it taken by another business, then we would recomend that you register it as a domain name! |
| E-commerce or Brochure Site? |
|
A business will need to know the difference between an e-commerce and a brochure site and which one they will need. What is an e-commerce site? An e-commerce site is a fully interactive site in which the retailer has their database of goods or services up on their website. Customers can browse through the products or search for specific products. The customer should be able to identify the price and availability of the product. They can then make the decision to order and pay for the product immediately in real time over the internet. A decent e-commerce site would usually cost several thousand euros to develop but for a large retailer this would more than pay for itself if it only saved the wages of one employee. |
| Brochure Site |
|
An e-commerce site might not be for everybody. Some businesses may only need what's known as a brochure site. Here information and pictures are just sitting there like pages of book with a table of contents at the front. This allows people to see their products or services without the expense of printing the brochure and the customer can browse through the products and order by telephone or email from the comfort of their own home. A brochure site could cost anything from €320 to a couple of thousand euros. |
| How long will my customers wait? |
|
A business man was talking to his Internet Consultant recently and explained how his Internet strategy was going to cost tens of thousands of euros. It was going to be ready in twelve months time and be one of the biggest e-commerce sites in the country. He explained how he had a huge customer base already and how it was just a matter of showing them how to work the system when it came online. He could do this by having PCs in the shop and the staff would let the customer key in the order themselves. The Internet Consultant paused for a moment and then asked, "but what are you doing now?". The business man seemed puzzled. The consultant explained that while it was fantastic the plans that the businessman had for twelve months time, he needed to be doing something now. While this businessman is busy getting ready for next year, his competitors may already be taking his customers. He hasn't even his domain registered. The important thing for this individual to do, is to immediately get his domain registered and get something, anything up on that website! A picture of one or two of his products or services. Perhaps a mission statement and a signal of his intentions for next year. One page, that's all. A couple of hours work is all it would take and at least now his customers know that he is serious about providing an online service. Now he has the foundation layed, he can start building his new e-commerce site! |
| Seek Advice |
|
The other important thing is to shop around. Believe it or not, this is as important for domain registration and hosting as it is for webdesign. There are huge differences in the cost of these services and not shopping around could mean paying exorbitantly high prices for the same service. Businesses must ensure also that they are comparing like with like. €255 could be very good value from one company, but could be very bad from another. Likewise, €1270 could be very good value from one company and very bad from another. Seeking professional advice is vital in assessing these issues. Whether a business consults with local government agencies or private Internet companies, the most important thing is to get advice. |

Our new site is now fully operational and has been a tremendous help to our business generally. It allows our customers to research our online software catalogue and choose the most appropriate software and licensing through to ordering the selected products for next day delivery. We also use the website when talking to customers on the phone as it reminds us of the various products in each category and we can instantly quote the many licensing prices as read from the screen.
Our new website also has a facility for us to quickly add new products or delete discontinued products without the need for outside help. The site also automatically adjusts the price of all the sterling products based on today's rate; a facility that saves us money all the time by making sure that we quote the correct price in Euro.
Last, and by no means least, our website has a customer email contact facility (Barrowvale Communicator) that allows us to contact customers with latest offers, news on new releases, updated information or any promotions that we have, all with one click of the mouse.
Barrowvale also have great success in driving traffic to our site, which almost always ends up in very cost effective additional sales. We are very pleased with the cost, backup service and marketing expertise of the Barrowvale team. You can check out our website here, www.diskovery.ie

| Excerpts from an interview... |
Better Business in County Laois. Following are excerpts from an interview with Barrowvale Technology's Managing Director, Oliver Dempsey, in September 2002. The interview was done by Mr. Alan Keogh, Fineline Productions. The purpose of the interview was to discuss the attributes of doing business in Co. Laois (pronounced Leesh).
Tell us about your company Oliver I run a company called Barrowvale Technology Ltd here in Co. Laois which was set up 3 years ago to satisfy the demand for marketing on the web. We have now moved into the area of software development and have produced a number of Internet products in order to reduce the cost of producing a website and yield real commercial benefits to our clients.
What benefits does Co. Laois have for a company like yours which specializes in Web and Software Development?
1. Central location, we are 1 - 1 ˝ hours from most major centers of population in Ireland. We sell websites and software all over Ireland from Dublin to Cork, from Wexford to Sligo 2. Cost of living and quality of life is better in Co. Laois, which means that we have had no difficulty in attracting employees to our company. 3. Costs of office space, travel, and insurance are all less in Co. Laois. This means that we can provide a higher quality product and service at a lower cost than our competitors based in major urban areas. 4. The support infrastructure and roads are of a very high standard. We can travel to Dublin airport in the same amount of time that it would take someone from South Dublin. Barrowvale Technology has already made business contacts in New Zealand, Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland and we have just secured two large contracts in California. We will continue to develop these relationships, which will benefit the Irish economy as a whole. Our access to other cities will improve even more when the M7 is completed in the coming years. 5. There is no reason why companies in Co. Laois cannot develop leading products and technologies to take on global markets. Here at Barrowvale we are currently developing software that handles advanced image and photo editing and I believe it will be the first of it's kind in the world.
So what type of companies do you develop websites for Oliver? We work with companies and organisations from all walks of life who are involved in providing products and services to consumers and other business. We have developed sites for retail, manufacture, distribution, marketing and service industries. We are experienced in a range of website products anything from real-estate to consultancy, from tourism to e-commerce.
Are there any disadvantages for you when many of your customers are scattered around Ireland? On the contrary, it is an advantage to have customers spread throughout the country and indeed throughout the world since it gives us a better understanding of the needs of a larger segment of the population in local and international markets. It enables us to better assist our customers to market their products and services on the wider national and international market as well as in the local market.
Do you have any new products in the pipeline? We have developed a product which enables business to update their own website on a regular basis using a standard PC and Internet connection. Until now the website could only be administered by a trained person in the office or by a third party at considerable expense and often with delays in its implementation. However, with this new product any staff member can edit information simply and easily on the company website. Its effect is immediate.
Where would Barrowvale Technology like to be in five years? In five years time Barrowvale Technology will have further developed our excellent service to our customers. We will continue to work in partnership with our clients; growing their market share, using the Internet to increase their sales and profits and increasing the quality and promptness of their own customer service. |
